Happy Thanksgiving Suffolk AME

Thursday, November 23, 2017
When thinking about what Thanksgiving means, we of course know this is the time to celebrate the art and practice of giving thanks; of being thankful for our family, our friends, our loved ones. Thanksgiving, however, is not solely about recognizing these relationships or our numerous other dealings that define ourselves and give our lives purpose. More than this, Thanksgiving is a holiday in which we should reflect on all the small, everyday blessings that we all too often take for granted. As the great American writer Ernest Hemingway said, "Now is no time to think of what you do not have. Think of what you can do with what there is." Taking this further, I ask you to not only look ahead, but look back and think of what you have already achieved with what has been laid out before you; remind yourself of all you have already won instead of allowing the trivial upsets of the day to rule and define you. Too often we let the one thing that goes wrong out shadow all that has gone right. The more mindful we are of what we have to be thankful for, the more happiness we will derive from each and every day.

This Thanksgiving, I know I am thankful for the big things: for friends and family; for you, our union, and our collective willingness to stand up and fight for what we have worked so tirelessly for. For those of you fortunate enough to have tomorrow off, I ask you to please remember and thank our brothers and sisters in the 24-hour divisions who will not be able to celebrate Thanksgiving Day with their friends and family, as they will be working for the betterment and safety of all of us and our great County.

On behalf of the AME Executive Board, I sincerely thank you for all you do each and every day for your union, your County, and your communities. We wish you all a happy and safe Thanksgiving Day.

"Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds."- Theodore Roosevelt

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."- John Fitzgerald Kennedy
