AME Needs to Get on the Bus

Tuesday, February 20, 2018
In the past, I have often used this forum to discuss the importance of demonstrating our ability to organize and mobilize through political activism and engagement. The best way to hold influence over elected officials is to show them firsthand that we can rally hundreds, if not thousands, of people around the causes and issues that are important to us; that we can be a determining factor in their next election either through our support or through our opposition.
That is why as a union we are only as strong as our membership is engaged. Being the largest independent union in New York State with approximately 10,000 active and retired members is a high talking point. However, if we are unable to demonstrate an ability to amass an army of engaged and active members out of those 10,000 people, then that is all it is: a talking point. If we want to be as influential as we can be, as prominent as we deserve to be, then it is incumbent upon each of us as individuals to get involved and join in the fight.
Next month, on March 21, 2018, your fellow AME members, your Executive Board, and I will be heading up to Albany by the busload for our annual Suffolk County AME Lobby Day. This day is an outstanding opportunity to demonstrate our ability to mobilize as one union, one collective and cohesive unit. Moreover, it is a prime opportunity to join together in solidarity with your AME brothers and sisters from work sites throughout the County.
Your Executive Board and I have been hard at work finalizing our 2018 State Legislative Agenda, but we will need your voice, your face to help deliver that agenda to our elected officials in the State Capitol Building. If we want our elected representatives to hear us, they need to see us. So, let us speak up and let us go up to Albany together in solidarity.
With one bus already completely filled, the time to register for Suffolk County AME's Annual Lobby Day is now! Join your brothers and sisters in labor and get on the bus to Albany!
